NHL Prospect Reveals Girlfriend’s Heartbreaking Stage 4 Cancer Diagnosis

NHL prospect Austin Roest is standing beside his girlfriend, Milly Okabe, as she faces a devastating health battle at just 22 years old.

Roest, 22, recently revealed that Okabe has been diagnosed with stage 4 adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer that begins in glandular cells. He shared the difficult news in an emotional Instagram post on Sept. 4, along with photos that included Okabe lying in a hospital bed.

The Nashville Predators prospect told his girlfriend how much he loves her and promised that she will not have to face the difficult road ahead alone. He also expressed confidence in her strength and ability to keep fighting as she begins treatment.

Roest, who was selected by the Predators in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft, said he plans to remain by Okabe’s side throughout her cancer journey.

Milly Okabe Opens Up About Diagnosis

Okabe has also spoken publicly about what she is facing.

In her own Instagram post, the 22-year-old admitted that there is a great deal of fear surrounding the unknown. However, she said she feels fortunate to have such a strong group of friends and family supporting her.

Okabe also thanked everyone who has reached out, donated or offered support since news of her diagnosis became public.

Her loved ones are now rallying around her as she prepares for treatment.

Fundraiser Raises More Than $89,000

A GoFundMe fundraiser was created by family friend Kristin LeDuc to help Okabe and her family with the growing expenses connected to her cancer treatment.

According to the fundraiser, Okabe, whose full name is Milara Okabe, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 adenocarcinoma.

The fundraiser describes her as a kind, strong and selfless young woman who has spent much of her life around skating.

After years as a high-level skater herself, Okabe began sharing her love of the sport by teaching children how to skate. When she isn’t at the rink, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

Her diagnosis has suddenly changed everyday life for Okabe and the people closest to her.

As she goes through treatment, her family is trying to remain by her side as much as possible. That has brought a number of unexpected expenses, including time away from work, travel, accommodations and medications.

The fundraiser also says money may be needed for fertility preservation and other costs that can arise during cancer treatment.

All of the money raised is intended to help Okabe throughout her treatment and reduce some of the financial pressure on her family so they can concentrate on her health and recovery.

Support has already poured in. More than $89,000 Canadian dollars has been raised for Okabe and her family so far.

Roest and Okabe Have Been Together Since 2023

Roest and Okabe began dating in 2023, when they were both around 19 years old.

Although they have generally kept their relationship relatively private, the couple has occasionally shared photos and special moments together on social media.

Earlier this year, Okabe celebrated Roest’s birthday with a post looking back at how much their lives had changed since they first got together.

Now, at 22, the couple is facing a challenge neither could have expected.

As Okabe begins her fight against stage 4 cancer, Roest has made one thing clear: he intends to be beside her throughout the journey, while friends, family and supporters continue rallying around the young skater
