Update: Man, 19, Killed In Palisades Parkway Crash In Stony Point

UPDATE: A 19-year-old Orange County resident was killed after his car left the rain-slicked Palisades Interstate Parkway in Rockland County and struck a tree, police said.

Newburgh resident Christopher A. Rivera died following the single-vehicle crash on the southbound parkway near Exit 16 in the Town of Stony Point on Tuesday, Sept. 1, New York State Police confirmed Tuesday evening. 

The crash happened around 9:46 a.m. near mile marker 31.3 as Rivera was driving a 2010 Toyota Corolla southbound. It was raining at the time, causing the roadway to be wet. 

For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota left the roadway, entered the center median, and struck a tree, police said. 

Rivera, who was the only person in the vehicle, had to be pulled from the wreckage. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, where he later died from his injuries, police said. 

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing. State Police are asking anyone who personally witnessed the crash to contact the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Haverstraw at 845-344-5300. 

Donald Swope Charged With Threatening President Donald Trump

Donald Swope wasn't subtle about his plans for President Donald Trump.The 53-year-old Maryland man made his first appearance in federal court on Tuesday, Sept. 1, after prosecutors say a months-long series of Facebook posts escalated into threats against Trump and the US Secret Service.

Among them was one particularly chilling message aimed directly at the president.

"I will behead you Donald J. Trump," Swope allegedly wrote in a Facebook post highlighted by federal prosecutors.

He followed it by tagging Trump and a lengthy list of government agencies, officials and media outlets, according to a screenshot released by the US Attorney's Office.

Federal prosecutors say it wasn't an isolated post.

According to the criminal complaint, Swope repeatedly posted about harming Trump between May 12 and July 27.

Then his alleged targets expanded.

On Aug. 5, Swope made multiple Facebook posts threatening the Secret Service, prosecutors said. The threatening posts allegedly continued from Aug. 6 through Aug. 8.

Swope is now charged in a criminal complaint with:

Threats against the president of the United States;

Interstate communication containing a threat to harm;

Influencing, impeding, or retaliating against a federal official by threatening or injuring a family member.

The case is being prosecuted as part of Joint Task Force Vanguard and a nationwide initiative targeting political violence, according to the US Attorney's Office.

Cause Of Death Determined For US Attorney Andrew Haden, 48

 

Former Acting US Attorney Andrew Haden, 48, died by suicide, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed, according to the Los Angeles Times. The cause of death was hanging.A medical examiner has determined how a prominent federal prosecutor died after his body was discovered inside a government building.

Haden was found inside a vacant office at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building in downtown San Diego late Wednesday, Aug. 19, shortly after he was reported missing.

Investigators found no evidence of foul play. The medical examiner classified the manner of death as suicide on Friday, Aug. 28, the LA Times reported.

Haden was serving as an assistant US attorney for the Southern District of California when he died. He had worked in the office since 2010 and became its second-in-command as First Assistant US Attorney in 2022.

He twice led the district as acting US attorney during leadership transitions, first in 2023 and again in 2025.

Haden also served as chief of the Criminal Division and chief of the Violent Crimes & Human Trafficking Section, according to the Justice Department.

Before joining the Justice Department, Haden served five years as a US Navy officer and completed two overseas deployments. His final military assignment was as navigator aboard the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay.
