Former NFL Defensive Star Dies at 36:

 Former All-Pro pass rusher Aldon Smith has died at the age of 36.

The San Francisco 49ers, who selected Smith with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, confirmed the news in a statement released on Saturday, June 13, mourning the loss of the former standout defender.

“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the Niners’ said in a statement.

Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Born on September 25, 1989, in Greenwood, Mississippi, and raised in Missouri, Smith played college football at the University of Missouri, where his size, speed and pass-rushing ability made him one of the nation’s top defensive prospects. The San Francisco 49ers selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Smith made an immediate impact in the NFL. As a rookie, he recorded 14 sacks and finished second in the voting for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. The following season, he was nearly unstoppable, posting 19.5 sacks and earning Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors while helping lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

At one point, many believed Smith was on track to become one of the greatest defensive players of his generation. But off-the-field issues repeatedly interrupted his career. He faced several arrests and legal problems, including DUI and weapons-related charges, and spent time away from football while dealing with substance abuse issues.

After leaving the 49ers, Smith had brief stints with the Oakland Raiders and later the Dallas Cowboys, where he made a successful comeback in 2020 after being out of the league for several years. He recorded five sacks that season and was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America.

Despite flashes of the talent that once made him a superstar, Smith was never able to fully regain the career trajectory he had in his early 20s. His story became one of extraordinary promise mixed with personal hardship.
