Vivian Left Her Fifteen Million Dollar House to Save Her Sick Daughter

My Daughter Had a 104°F Fever—But My Husband Told Me to Leave Her Upstairs for His Party

Sabina's forehead was burning.

Her tiny fingers kept twisting the same curl of hair around her finger, and I could feel the heat coming from her skin.

But downstairs, our enormous house was being prepared for a formal charity event.

Sixty guests were expected.

And my mother-in-law, Beatrix, was more concerned about the party than my sick daughter.

She looked at me in my simple work clothes and complained that I wasn't dressed properly.

"The guests are arriving in forty minutes."

I told her Sabina had a fever.

Beatrix dismissed it as a common cold.

Then she ordered me to go inspect the food.

I refused.

I was Sabina's mother, not the party manager.

I went looking for my husband, Thatcher.

I found him in the dining room, calmly arranging silverware for the twenty-four-person table.

I showed him the thermometer.

104.1°F.

He barely reacted.

He told me to give Sabina children's aspirin and keep her upstairs.

But I knew something was seriously wrong.

Her breathing was too fast.

She needed a doctor.

Thatcher didn't care.

He was worried about the sixty wealthy guests arriving for the charity event and the important business connections he expected to make.

He told me that I needed to stay downstairs and fulfill my responsibilities.

I stared at him in disbelief.

"Our daughter is seriously ill."

His response was cold.

He said she needed her mother to fulfill her obligations downstairs.

Then he ordered me to take her upstairs and let her sleep.

I tried one more time.

"She cannot breathe properly."

Thatcher told me to stop arguing.

His mother had spent three months organizing the event, and he wasn't going to let me ruin it.

That was when I made my decision.

I picked up my daughter and walked away.

I wasn't going to let a charity dinner, wealthy guests, or my husband's reputation stand between my child and emergency medical care.

As I walked through the silent hallway, I realized something terrifying.

If Sabina survived that night, our marriage might not.
