Three weeks after bringing our newborn twins, Theo and Kai, home from the hospital, I noticed something strange.

Daniel's location had disappeared from our family tracking app.

Instead of showing his location, there was only a grey circle.

At first, I assumed it was a technical problem.

But when I asked Daniel about it, he immediately blamed the cell carrier.

He claimed the reception was terrible near the pharmacy.

I wasn't convinced.

The pharmacy was on Oak Street, surrounded by cell towers. I'd been there myself only days earlier and had full reception.

Daniel insisted it was nothing.

"I have nothing to hide from you."

But instead of checking his phone, he turned the screen off and continued preparing the twins' bottles.

That bothered me.

Later that afternoon, I brought it up again.

Daniel became defensive.

He said we had never had newborn twins before and that exhaustion was making everything seem more serious than it was.

But I wasn't asking where he had been because I wanted to control him.

I simply wanted to know where my husband was when he was supposed to be picking up medicine for our babies.

That evening, I found Daniel sitting in the nursery with Theo asleep against his chest.

I asked him to restart his phone.

He refused.

He said he was too exhausted to deal with technology after barely sleeping because of Kai's colic.

Then he casually told me he'd actually been at the hardware store.

That made me pause.

I'd been told he was going to the pharmacy.

I reminded him that the tracking app hadn't shown weak reception.

It showed his phone as completely offline.

Daniel looked at me and dismissed my concern.

"It's not a conspiracy."

Maybe it wasn't.

Maybe his phone really had malfunctioned.

Maybe exhaustion had simply made him forget where he'd been.

But as I stood there watching my husband rock our newborn son, one thought wouldn't leave my mind.

Why would Daniel's phone suddenly disappear from the tracking system—and why had his story already changed?

I didn't know it yet, but the answer had nothing to do with a bad cell signal.
