Sarah Palin on the End of Her 31-Year Marriage

Former Alaska Governor and 2008 vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin has spoken publicly about the end of her long marriage to Todd Palin. The couple, who wed in 1988 and raised five children together, divorced after more than three decades.

In a 2019 interview, Palin said she first learned that her husband was seeking a  divorce through an email from his attorney in June of that year. Todd Palin formally filed the divorce paperwork in September 2019, citing incompatibility of temperament. The divorce was finalized in early 2020.

Palin described the news as deeply difficult. She noted that the couple had been going through counseling at the time and emphasized the importance she places on  family. Throughout her public life—from her time as governor of Alaska to her national  political role—she has often highlighted her identity as a wife and mother alongside her professional work.

The end of the marriage marked a significant personal chapter for a figure who spent years under intense media and political scrutiny. In speaking about it, Palin framed the experience in terms of resilience and the challenges many families face when long-term relationships change.
