Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped away from royal life, they have had a very strained relationship with the British royal family. Some think the relationship will never be repaired, but reportedly, King Charles is not one of those people.
In July, Harry, Meghan and their children, Archie and Lilibet, made a very rare visit to meet with the king. They accepted his invitation to meet at Gloucestershire estate. This was the first time Charles had seen his grandchildren since the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. It was only the second time he had ever seen Lilibet.
The reunion reportedly latest only about an hour, and Harry and Meghan have also reportedly been “sworn to secrecy.” There have not have any pictures shared from the visit, and there have also been no leaks as far as what happened or what was discussed.
While the meeting seems to indicate that Charles would like to repair the relationship with his younger son and his family, a source who spoke to Closer think that is fruitless because of how Prince William and Kate Middleton feel about the Sussexes.
According to the source, “William and Kate both believe there are some things that can’t be undone.” The source continues, “However much Charles wants everyone to move on, William and Kate don’t think it’s possible to build bridges without first building trust – and, right now, that doesn’t exist.”
The source explained, “Charles believes the monarchy has to think long-term, and Harry, Meghan and the children could still have a role in strengthening the institution if relationships could somehow be repaired.”
However, William and Kate aren’t on board with this idea. The source shared, “But William and Kate don’t see it that way and they feel it won’t be solved by putting duty first. Kate is normally incredibly forgiving – she much prefers to forgive and forget, rather than hold grudges – but this is completely different.”
The source continued by explaining Kate’s perspective, saying, “She feels like she was dragged into a very public dispute that she never wanted any part of. She can usually put difficult situations behind her, but she’s still carrying the hurt of what happened. She can’t file those feelings away just because someone tells her it’s better for the monarchy.”
The source added that Kate “can’t just rebuild the broken trust because it’s politically convenient. People often assume William is the emotional one because he’s naturally more outspoken, but Kate has been carrying this quietly for years. She was hurt by the way events unfolded and the public narrative surrounding her – she feels she became collateral damage in someone else’s story.”
According to the source, there is only one way William would be willing to consider forgiving the Sussexes. The source explained, “Charles has repeatedly encouraged William and Kate to separate their personal feelings from what he believes is best for the monarchy. He worries about its long-term future and believes unity would strengthen it. But William has made it absolutely clear to both his father and senior aides that there is no way back – unless the Sussexes properly acknowledge the damage they’ve done.”
It seems the William is choosing his wife’s side. The source shared, “He knows how much it affected Kate, and seeing how hurt she’s been has made him more determined to hold his brother accountable. He can’t separate his public and family life for the sake of constitutional duty.”
