Former NFL football player Alphonso Smith Jr. posted a disturbed message on Facebook on September 2nd that originally may have seemed to be an apology and a cry for help but now seems to be a suicide note to his friends and family. In the post, he writes, “Do not cry for me! I tried everything in my power to fight the demons behind the ones that someone put into ME! I did not want to be that WAY! I know I have disappointed so many folks. This is a DEMON in me! But not only me! It’s EVERYONE! I have HURT so many! I needed help & did not get it!”
He continues by apologizing and calling himself “A HUGE COWARD!” He added, “I am so sorry… To my kids, daddy is SO SORRY! To my friends, I love you all, but your boy was f***ed up!”
He also alluded to an incident with an older woman writing, “To my family, BABY, my MOM, my siblings, things happened to your boy, your brother while I was little that an older lady did onto me. As a result guys, I did the same onto others! Please forgive me!”
He continued by writing, “Please pray over your families! PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL I’ve affected! I am the WORST & I pray my soul rest in heaven for my heart is pure, but my BRAIN & experience is MESSED UP.”
Then he ended the post ominously by writing, “Once again to ALLLLLL! I am SORRY! THIS IS IT!”
His friends and family filled the comments section of the post urging him that things would be okay and not to do anything rash. One person wrote, “No one is perfect we’ve all been through some Fkd up stuff. This is not the end there’s time for redemption. Think about ur babies!! Please don’t.”
He did not publicly share many details about his family or personal life, but on Instagram, he shared a post in honor of his daughter Ava’s third birthday. On July 7, he wrote, “Ava epitomizes the term, “Daddy’s girl”. There’s no doubt in my mind, that I’m her favorite person in the world & for that I am grateful. Happy 3rd Birthday to my right hand girl, love you Ava!”
Sources who spoke to TMZ shared that Smith Jr. committed suicide at a housing community in Florida the same day he posted on Facebook, September 2nd. He was only 42 years old.
Smith Jr. was a cornerback at Wake Forest University. In 2009, he was drafted by the Denver Broncos, but one year later, he was traded to the Detroit Lions. He played for Detroit for three seasons and ended his professional football career in 2012. During his NFL career, he played 42 games, and he racked up 88 tackles and 8 interceptions.
